About Us

A Legacy of Compassion and Care

Founded in 1906, the Germiston Bedfordview SPCA has been at the forefront of animal welfare for over a century. Our mission is to prevent cruelty and promote the welfare of all animals while striving to end animal cruelty in South Africa and fostering compassion for all creatures.

Our History

Our current premises, located in Driehoek, were officially opened on 2 November 1963 by Mayor Councillor S.J. Hattingh. In 2017, we proudly expanded our reach and became the Germiston Bedfordview SPCA, reflecting the inclusion of Bedfordview, which was previously separate from the Germiston Municipality.

Our Mission and Vision

We are dedicated to serving and protecting all animals within our care. Our objective is to uplift animal welfare, uphold the protection guaranteed by South African law, and ensure that every animal receives the compassion and care they deserve.

Our mission is clear: to prevent cruelty and enhance the welfare of all animals. We envision a South Africa where animal cruelty is eradicated and where every animal is treated with respect and kindness.

Our Services and Operations

Our comprehensive services include animal cruelty investigation, sheltering, rehoming, and providing access to primary animal health care. Together with our sister SPCAs in the Ekurhuleni Region, we operate the official municipal pound for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, specifically covering the greater Germiston area.
Our dedicated team includes experienced Inspectors, caring Kennel Staff, and efficient Administrative personnel. Together, we strive to provide the highest standard of care and support for animals and the community.

Our Area of Operation

We serve an area spanning approximately 202.65 km², which includes an estimated population of 663,157 and 216,114 households. As a registered non-profit and Public Benefit Organisation, we rely on the generosity of donors to support our vital work. All donations are tax-deductible.

The Five Freedoms

We advocate for the Five Freedoms, ensuring that every animal under our care has:

Freedom from hunger and thirst through access to fresh water and a nutritious diet.
Freedom from discomfort by providing appropriate shelter and a comfortable environment.
Freedom from pain, injury, or disease through prevention, rapid diagnosis, and treatment.
Freedom to express normal behaviour with sufficient space and proper facilities.
Freedom from fear and distress by providing conditions and treatment that avoid mental suffering.

Our Management Committee

Our current management committee comprises dedicated individuals who guide our mission and operations:

Christine Kuch (Chairperson)
Hilary Mitchley (Secretary)
Jacques Peacock (Treasurer)
Gabbi de Brito
