Helping Reunite You with Your Pet

Losing a pet is a stressful experience, but the Germiston Bedfordview SPCA is here to help. If your pet has gone missing or if you’ve found a stray animal, follow the steps below to increase the chances of a successful reunion.

If You’ve Lost Your Pet:

  • Visit Us: If you’ve lost your pet, we encourage you to visit our SPCA in person as soon as possible. While phone descriptions can help, identifying your pet face-to-face is far more reliable.
  • Microchips & Tags: Pets with microchips and identification tags are much easier to reunite with their owners. Make sure your pet is microchipped and that your contact details are up to date.
  • Keep Looking: Post flyers around your neighbourhood, speak to your neighbours, and notify your local Neighbourhood Watch. Contact all local veterinary practices and animal welfare organisations.
  • Avoid Offering Rewards: Offering a financial reward may encourage theft and exploitation.

If You’ve Found a Stray Animal:

  • If you find a stray dog or cat, bring it to the Germiston Bedfordview SPCA, or keep it safe in your yard and contact us to collect it. We will scan the animal for a microchip and check our Lost & Found registry.
  • By law, anyone who rescues a stray animal is required to report it within 24 hours to the SPCA.
  • We are required by law to shelter a stray animal for 7 days to allow the rightful owner time to claim them. After this period, unclaimed animals may be placed for adoption.

Tips to Prevent Your Pet from Going Missing:

  • Secure Your Property: Ensure your property is escape-proof and safe for your pets.
  • Identification: Keep your pets readily identifiable with a collar, name tag, and microchip.
  • Sterilisation: Sterilised pets are less likely to wander in search of a mate.
  • Boarding: If you’re going away, consider placing your pet in a reputable boarding facility.
  • Pet Sitters: If leaving your pets at home, always use a trusted pet-sitter.

Remember, staying proactive and acting fast will greatly increase the chances of finding your pet. Contact us at 011 825 5033 for any assistance.
